Top 10 Things To Do In Key West

I love to travel and I LOVE Key West.  If you're looking for a family vacation, keep looking.  This place is fun for adults, girl getaways, honeymoons, and escapes without the kids, but it isn't where I would spend my holiday with the kids!  There is so much to do and so many places to go - and I'm breaking it down for you into 10 must do's in no particular order!

    • Sunset viewing is a must.  Most will tell you Mallory Square (which is awesome), but I'm going to tell you to go to the top of the La Concha (La Concha Crown Plaza now) hotel.  It is the tallest building in Key West (at a whole 5 stories).  You can go up to the top, have a cocktail, see the WHOLE island and watch an amazing sunset.  Runners up are taking a sunset viewing cruise (how fun!).
    • Going to lunch?  You have to eat at Louie's Back Yard Cafe at least once (you may want to do it twice). Eat outside on their back deck. It's unlike anywhere else.  Sitting on the water.  The beautiful Key West Water! The food is delicious too. Can't go wrong. You could go for dinner, but lunch is uncrowded usually and lovely.
    • Get used to happy hour.  It's part of the Key West culture (and there are a few places on this list to take part).  Everyone wants to go where Hemingway went - so do you.  Sloppy Joe's is the name of the bar.  Go.  Drink.  Watch everyone be happy to be where Hemingway drank.
    • Now that you've drank where he drank, you need to go see Hemingway's House.  It's so lovely.  And there are cats (with 6 toes no less) wandering around the grounds that are the descendents of Hemingway's cats - weird but true.  His house is lovely and should be viewed.  You'll get some of the side stories of America's Author and it's amusing.  Not an all day affair at all, so you'll have plenty of time to make it to happy hour!
    • Another Key West Happy Hour tradition - Hogs Breath Saloon.  Get a drink, buy the t-shirt, enjoy being in Key West.  Sit outside (unless you are there in August - then go INSIDE where there is air conditioning!).  They have great entertainment.
    • Go to the Truman "Little White House."  It's a nice relaxing day.  Gives you some good insight on Harry Truman and how much he loved Key West too!  A neat little piece of history.
    • Eat Key Lime Pie.  Yes really.  You have to.  There  are a lot of good ones.  I doubt you'll get a bad piece of Key Lime Pie in Key West, but I like Kermits.  It's yummy and they have all kinds of Key Lime treats in their stores!
    • Be a good little tourist and go take your picture at the Southern Most Point.  You are officially 90 miles away from Cuba.  It's touristy but it's awesome. You need that picture!
    • Walk down Duval Street and pick a restaurant to eat outside at. There are tons. All have their menu's posted on the sidewalk.  Do this for more than one meal!  There are so many delicious choices. Being from the North East I was skeptical to try Italian Food in Florida.  WRONG. Delicious. I had my first Tuna Tar Tar at another one of those outside seating restaurants. So many choices, you are bound to find a great one!
    • Do the Ghost Tour!  It's so cute and fun.  Even if you're not a spooky type person (my husband went with me but he is not into the spirits like me:)) you will still have fun.  You get to walk around, see some great locations, hear not only the haunting history, but the history of the home/building.  It's awesome.

Whatever you do, check your worries as you enter the Conch Republic. This isn't the place for them. This is the place for beautiful water, amazing food, the town of happy hours, great history, and true relaxation!
Did I miss anything that you would want to do? Let me know!
